Google adds Indianapolis International Airport to indoor maps service
INDIANAPOLIS – Visitors to the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) now have a new, easy way to orient themselves and see the many services and amenities the airport offers: Google Maps has just expanded its popular online mapping service to include maps of indoor locations, including IND. Beginning today, guests will be able to access Google Maps from their Android devices and zoom into the IND terminal, concourses, and parking garage to view detailed floor plans. The dynamic map display will include precise location information for points of interest such as departure gates, shops, restaurants, restrooms, ATMs, and more.
Google’s new indoor maps feature is seamlessly integrated into Google Maps--there is no separate app to download and no need to download individual maps for different venues. Android users can simply access Google Maps and automatically see the indoor floor plan appear when looking at the IND campus. They can also determine their location within the airport using the Google Maps My Location feature, which represents the user via the familiar “blue dot” icon. A tool on the right hand side of the screen will even show users which floor they’re on and automatically change floor plans when users change levels
“We’re pleased to be among the very first airports to provide indoor maps for Android users, and as we’re entering the busy holiday travel season and gearing up to host Super Bowl visitors in February, the availability of this new Google Maps feature is ideal,” said John D. Clark III, executive director and CEO of the IAA. “Our terminal offers world-class features, including great restaurants and shopping, and this service will make it more convenient for our guests to take full advantage of them, especially for those on a tight schedule.”
“Travelers can now use Google Maps for Android to more quickly and effortlessly figure out where they are and what’s around them when they’re indoors,” said Steve Lee, Director of Product Management at Google. “We’re thrilled to work with Indianapolis International Airport to improve people’s airport experience and help them determine various places within the venue they might want to go – be it a specific gate, ticket counter, restaurant, or just a restroom or ATM.”
The indoor maps feature is part of Google Maps 6.0 for Android-powered devices. Users will need to update the Google Maps application on their devices in order to access these maps, but no updates will be required after that one-time installation to get new or updated indoor maps. Users can update Google Maps for Android by visiting the Google Maps entry in Android Market on their phones or desktop.
