Hoosier Artists with Disabilities Honored at Indy Airport Today

Mayor, Indy Airport, INARF gather to celebrate local creatives with disabilities

INDIANAPOLIS (March 14, 2024) – The Indianapolis Airport Authority, Indiana Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, Ability Indiana and Mayor Joe Hogsett gathered at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) today to unveil an exhibit representing 72 art pieces created by 83 adults with disabilities – and honor March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

This annual event emphasizes and celebrates diverse artists and creatives in Indiana – which includes Hoosiers with disabilities. INARF, established 50 years ago, champions support for more than 50,000 members annually and employs nearly 15,000 workers.

“The City of Indianapolis is proud to join in this celebration of creativity and diversity at the Indianapolis International Airport,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “Indy is a community that welcomes all, for we know our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. May the beautiful work of these artists inspire those who travel to and from our city all month long.”

The exhibit is part of the Indy airport’s arts and culture program that supports an environment where art and culture thrive, and features permanent and temporary art collections displayed in both public and post-security areas throughout the airport. Many of the collections were created by artists who live in Indiana or have ties to the Hoosier state.

“From employment to art, Hoosiers with disabilities are an integral part of the diverse fabric of our community – and the Indy airport is an excellent place to showcase their talents and creativity as part of our public art program that welcomes guests from all places in life,” said Mario Rodriguez, IAA executive director.

The exhibit includes art pieces from local artists within INARF member organizations, Abilities Services, Inc., The Arc of Greater Boone County, Carey Services, Child Adult Resource Services – CARS, Easterseals Crossroads North, Janus Developmental Services, Inc., New Hope of Indiana, Inc., Noble, Inc., Putnam County Comprehensive Services and Wabash Center, Inc.

“We wanted to share even more incredible work created by artists with disabilities this year,” said Rodriguez. “Five more INARF member organizations joined the exhibit, growing participation and increasing the number of art pieces from 22 last year to 72 this year. It’s a big impact, and the artwork will be on display at the Indy airport for the next month.”

INARF, established in 1974, champions support for more than 70 member organizations creating quality programs for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. INARF is committed to strengthening the system of services and support for Hoosiers with disabilities.

The Ability Indiana Program creates a partnership among the public and private sectors to enhance employment and training opportunities for Indiana's citizens with disabilities. This coordinated effort provides an opportunity for individuals to achieve greater self-worth and esteem, improved economic independence and social inclusion.

“We appreciate the Indianapolis Airport Authority’s commitment to promoting the creativity of individuals with disabilities,” said INARF Vice President Andrew Alvarez. “Our Certified Ability Indiana Organizations and INARF members are proud to be part of this event for the second year in a row, and we are excited to hold more events like this in the future.”
