Flight Wave
Husband-and-wife team Arlon and Mary Jo Kramb Bayliss captured the dynamic feeling of flying through use of a simple, elegant form–the chevron. Composed of 205 three-dimensional, multicolored reflective chevrons "flying" in a gentle formation on a clear glass wall, Flight Wave is designed to be enjoyed by passengers on both sides of the wall.
- Artists: Arlon A. Bayliss and Mary Jo Kramb Bayliss, Anderson, Indiana
- Installation: 2008
- Materials: Glass and light; 130 feet by 10 feet
- Location: Concourse A security area
These mirror-like chevrons have wingspans of three different sizes. Each is composed of four pieces of glass, two of which are clear and two of which are dichroic–plain glass that has been coated with a thin layer of metal to give it a two-color optical property. A pane of dichroic glass may appear yellow, but the reflected light it casts is purple, its complementary color. Passengers can experience the rhythm of the piece as light dances off their clothing or floods the corridor with color and sparkles at the Concourse A security area.
